Choosing Your Campervan

Fridges for Your Campervan

Which one suits your travels?

Keep food fresh on the road. The right fridge depends on how you travel, what you carry and how you power your van.

Fresh food.
More freedom.

Campervan fridges: the quick answer

Choose compressor if…

you want a fridge running from your leisure battery, with charging planned around your trips.

Consider three-way if…

you want gas when parked and mains on hook-up. Check the model's 12V requirements.

But…

size, ventilation, noise and daily energy use matter as much as the fridge itself.

Which fridge setup suits you?

Battery-powered cooling. Budget for daily energy use and listen for compressor noise.

Three-way absorption fridge

Gas, mains and 12V options. Usually silent, with installation and levelling requirements.

Portable compressor fridges are another option. Thermoelectric coolboxes cool relative to the surrounding temperature — check their limits carefully.

Where will your fridge fit?

Think about everyday access — especially when the bed is made.

Shelves make food easy to see. Check the door can open fully without blocking the aisle or bed.

What might your fridge use?

An illustrative compressor-fridge budget — not a measured average.

ScenarioDaily energyAt 12V
Lower demand200 Wh17 Ah
Planning example300 Wh25 Ah
Higher demand500 Wh42 Ah

Plan for the whole van

At 300 Wh a day, the fridge alone needs 600 Wh over two days. Add lights, phones and your other loads.

Ah = Wh ÷ 12V. These are arithmetic scenarios, not product ratings. Heat, ventilation, settings and use change demand.

What should you check?

Start with how you shop, cook and travel.

Capacity
food space, freezer space and shopping frequency
Fit
dimensions, door swing and ventilation
Power
battery charging, hook-up and gas
Comfort
noise near your bed and easy access
Installation

Keep food safely chilled

Use a fridge thermometer. Aim for 0–5°C and leave room for air to circulate.

The pros and cons of each fridge type

12V compressor fridge

Three-way absorption fridge

  • Benefit:Runs on gas when parked, so spares your battery
  • Benefit:Practically silent in use
  • Benefit:Mains option on electric hook-up
  • Trade-off:Needs external venting and careful installation
  • Trade-off:Must be reasonably level to work properly
  • Trade-off:Less effective in high temperatures and on 12V

Personal story to add

The Campervan Considered view

Choose around your travel habits first, then match the fridge to your van and power supply.

If you move often or rely on your leisure battery, a compressor fridge is usually the simplest choice — as long as your charging can keep up. If you park up for longer and prefer silence, a three-way fridge running on gas can make sense.

Whichever you choose, check where it sits, how you'll reach it with the bed made, and what it adds to your daily power budget.
