There isn't one perfect campervan

Choosing the Van

The right starting point for your journeys.

Before you choose the extras, think about the vehicle itself — how it drives, where it fits and the space you need to live.

Real choices.
Brighter journeys.

Start with your life. Then find the van that fits.

Step 01: How much van do you need?

Size brings possibilities — and compromises. These are starting points, not fixed categories.

Compact campervan

A smaller footprint may suit everyday use. Check standing room, bed setup and space for your kit.

Consider: everyday practicality

Medium panel van

A possible middle ground for living space and manoeuvrability. Test the actual layout and dimensions.

Consider: the balance

Large panel van

More room for beds, storage and facilities. Check parking, turning space and usable payload.

Consider: space versus size

Length, width, roof height and conversion layout vary. Compare the actual vehicles.

Step 02: The van has to work in two worlds

A campervan driving along a winding lakeside road

On the road

  • Driving confidence — visibility, seating and handling
  • Everyday use — errands, work and passenger needs
  • Parking at home — length, width and height
  • Your routes — access, tight turns and restrictions

When you stop

  • Sleeping — bed size and nightly setup
  • Living — seating, headroom and a wet day indoors
  • Storage — clothes, food, outdoor kit and bedding
  • Facilities — the kitchen, toilet and wash space you need

Try both: drive it, park it, then make the bed and move around inside.

Step 03: Choose the route to your van

Buy an existing campervan

You can see and try the finished layout. Inspect both the vehicle and the conversion.

Commission a conversion

Shape a layout around your needs. Agree the specification, total cost, timescale and warranty.

Convert a van yourself

More hands-on control, with time and skills to plan. Budget for specialist work and approval requirements.

Compare the complete cost of a usable campervan, including any work still required.

Step 04: Before you fall in love with it

  • Check the base vehicle

Condition, service history, MOT record and an independent inspection.

  • Inspect the conversion

Look for leaks and test equipment; ask for installation and safety records.

  • Confirm the weight

Check actual loaded weight, maximum permitted weight and axle limits.

  • Check your licence

Confirm your entitlement covers the exact vehicle.

  • Price the whole picture

Purchase, repairs, insurance, servicing, storage and conversion costs.

  • Take a proper test drive

Use roads and parking situations that reflect your normal trips.

Use current official guidance and qualified specialists for vehicle-specific checks.

The best van is the one whose compromises you are happy to live with.
The Campervan Considered view

Write down three must-haves, three nice-to-haves and the compromises you can accept. Then compare vans against that list.
